Tomorrow will be action on Chubb - one of the insurance companies who has not said NO. Let's help them change it to YES WE WILL NOT INSURE TRANS MOUNTAIN PIPELINE!!
With 82 days to go until the Glasgow Climate Talks, we want to talk about one of the most important industries propping up fossil fuels: the insurance industry.
It’s simple: Without insurance, fossil fuel projects cannot be built or operated. But most major US insurance companies still provide insurance for the coal mines, oil pipelines and fracked gas terminals destroying our planet.
Last week, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse broke it down for us. In his words, it’s time for the US insurance industry “to wake up and show up. Stop underwriting fossil fuel expansion and phase out insurance for existing fossil fuels.”
“Insurance companies complain about the costs of climate change – worse hurricanes, floods, and droughts mean higher insurance payouts. But at the very same time these companies are providing a financial lifeline for the industries fueling the destruction of our planet,” Senator Whitehouse explains.
Can you watch the video and share it on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram: Insurance companies should insure our future, not fossil fuels.
Because of fierce campaigning from many of our coalition partners, over 30 companies worldwide have adopted policies to stop providing insurance for coal. But it’s not enough: many US companies still insure coal, and companies around the world are still insuring major new oil and gas projects. Yet, as the latest IPCC report made clear yesterday: we can’t afford any fossil fuel expansion if we’re going to avoid climate catastrophe.
One of the most critical battlegrounds in this fight is the Stop Insuring Trans Mountain campaign. Trans Mountain is a massive proposed tar sands pipeline that would trample Indigenous rights and be a disaster for our climate. You can help stop Trans Mountain by demanding that insurance companies drop the pipeline.
Right now, Trans Mountain is trying to get insurers for next year, and 15 companies have already ruled it out. Now we need the rest of the insurance industry to rule out this toxic pipeline as well.
Tomorrow morning, we’re going to send you an email asking you to take action to call out Chubb, one of the biggest insurance companies that still hasn’t ruled out providing insurance for Trans Mountain.
