Join the Resistance to Trans Mountain Did you know that a major tar sands pipeline is under construction that would impact the entire Salish Sea? Construction is ripping up the land for the Trans Mountain (TMX) tar sands pipeline right now, and we need your help to stop this toxic project. The good news is that construction of the expansion is not finished. This pipeline is far from a done deal. Recently, hummingbirds have prevented pipeline work on two sections of land! The Trans Mountain pipeline, and related expansion is a project that would transport an additional 590,000 barrels of tar sands oil per day from Alberta to British Columbia for refining in Washington and California. This would lead to a huge increase in oil tankers in the Salish Sea, and severely impact the already endangered Southerner Resident orcas. Current insurers of the pipeline are complicit in violating Indigenous rights and driving climate change through providing $500 million USD in coverage. Without insurance, the pipeline cannot keep operating, and its expansion can’t be constructed. That makes un-insuring Trans Mountain a critical way to stop the pipeline once and for all. Last year, Indigenous communities and activists pushed three insurance companies to cut ties with the pipeline. This June, there are events and actions planned all around the world: including from Copenhagen, Sierra Leone, Berlin, and along the pipeline route. We are not letting up the pressure. Will you join us in resisting Trans Mountain? Click here to Email the companies behind this project today. Trans Mountain is currently seeking insurers to back the project in the year to come, with a deadline of August 31. Right now we have a critical window in which to pressure insurers to rule out coverage for the pipeline and make Trans Mountain uninsurable.
In solidarity, Mary, Victoria, and Rein with the Stand Up to Oil Coalition
