Morgan Stanley was the only US bank to release a new climate plan at the Glasgow Climate Talks — but the plan it released is a disaster. Among the plan’s biggest problems: it lets the bank continue funding the expansion of the fossil fuel industry.

Send an email to Morgan Stanley’s CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer to make it clear: 2030 climate targets must include ending funding for fossil fuel expansion.

Morgan Stanley claims that their new climate targets are based on the International Energy Agency’s Net Zero by 2050 pathway. But a key part of the IEA’s recommendations was that “there is no need for investment in new fossil fuel supply in our net zero pathway.” This is a fact that Morgan Stanley chose to ignore.

We know why Morgan Stanley forgot to include ending support for new fossil fuels in its climate plans ― they are the world’s largest funder of new LNG terminals. But funding new fossil fuel projects locks in climate pollution for decades to come and it’s absolutely essential that we stop building new fossil fuel infrastructure.

We recently got a reminder that these email actions work. Three weeks ago, more than 6,000 of you sent emails to the top executives at the Bank of New York Mellon, demanding that they don’t fund the Adani coal mine. Less than two weeks later, the bank announced it would not be funding Adani, a massive win for the Indigenous-led, years-long campaign to stop this horrific project.

Now let’s send a message to Morgan Stanley’s leadership: any new climate plans must start by prohibiting support for fossil fuel expansion.
