This past weekend in Huntington Beach, just 10 miles from where I live in Southern California, a pipeline connected to an offshore oil platform ruptured and sent more than 100,000 gallons of crude oil flooding into the Pacific Ocean and onto beaches.

The coastline near my home normally teeming with wildlife and families is now covered with black tar, dead fish, and dying birds.

What are President Biden and Governor Newsom doing to prevent this from happening in the future?

Spoiler alert: Not enough.

The truth is, if they wanted to, both President Biden and Governor Newsom could decide tomorrow to stop issuing new permits for fossil fuel infrastructure. They could stop an untold number of oil spills before they even have a chance to happen.

But unless they are hit with an unprecedented wave of pressure from their constituents, they won’t. That’s where we come in.

To be honest, it’s mind-boggling that this even has to be said. We’re in the middle of a climate crisis – we shouldn’t be drilling new oil and gas wells anyway. You wouldn’t poke new holes in the bottom of a boat that was already sinking, would you?

And yet, here we are. President Biden is approving more new oil wells each month than Trump did at the height of his presidency. [1] In 2020, Governor Newsom approved 116% more oil wells than the previous year. [2] Each and every single one of those approvals puts our communities and planet at risk.
