Just a few giant corporate monopolies own and operate most of the U.S. railroad network – the largest in the world. Everyone in this country relies on our freight rail system, and the workers who make it run, for transporting our things where they need to go. Yet, this critical piece of our infrastructure is in complete crisis.
While the corporate rail owners rake in record profits, they are perpetrating harmful and toxic derailments, horrible treatment of railroad workers, intensification of the climate crisis, and environmental pollution and injustice in nearby communities. All of us deserve better.
The event will spotlight critical voices united by the need for railroad in the public interest:
Nick Wurst: Freight conductor, member of SMART-TD Local #1473, representing Railroad Workers United
Ashley McCollum: East Palestine, Ohio resident, community organizer, researcher, and activist
Yvette Arellano: Founder/Executive Director of Fenceline Watch in Houston, Texas
Larry Hopkins: Road driver for Hallcon rail crew transportation in Chicago, President of UE Local #1177, representing rail crew drivers in several states
Helen Yost: Community organizer with Wild Idaho Rising Tide and producer and host of the weekly Climate Justice Forum radio program
Thomas M. Hanna: President of the Institute for a Democratic Economy and Society (IDES) and author of Our Common Wealth: The Return of Public Ownership in the United States.
Join us at the Labor Network for Sustainability (LNS) as we stand with railroad workers and frontline communities calling for a rail system that serves the common good, not corporate greed. I’ll see you there!
