Sometimes stopping the money pipeline isn’t enough. We also need a President who will take a bold, uncompromising stand against fossil fuels.
Despite calls from millions of people and nine months of bold direct action from Water Protectors in Minnesota, President Biden has refused to stop the Line 3 pipeline. He has also continued to issue permits for thousands of new oil and gas wells and given the green light to a massive new oil drilling project in Alaska.
We know that engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience is a bigger ask, and a bigger risk, than simply attending a march or a rally. But we also know that nonviolent civil disobedience is uniquely effective at focusing attention on a problem, inspiring others to take action, and forcing decision makers to respond to our demands.
Civil disobedience has been used as a tactic in many struggles for justice, including in the climate movement. Back in 2011, nearly 1,200 people were arrested at the White House for protesting against the Keystone XL pipeline, helping to kick-off a decade-long campaign that resulted in the death of that massive pipeline.
We know it’s a big request, and not everyone will be able to take time off work, travel to DC, and engage in civil disobedience. But if you can afford to do this, there are few more important things that you could do with your time.
What happens at the Glasgow Climate Talks will go a long way to determining the success or failure of the Paris Agreement, and it is imperative that we make it clear to President Biden that the nation demands real climate action and an end to fossil fuels.
If you’ve never engaged in civil disobedience before, or have questions, you’re not alone; the team at People Vs Fossil Fuels is working with an amazing group of organizers to pull this off and they’ll be there to support you every step of the way.
We hope to see you on the streets of DC, starting on Indigenous People’s Day, October 11th.
