Letter of Solidarity

We, the members of 350Wenatchee are writing in solidarity for the Indigenous tribes of BC, and today in particular the Wet’suwet’en.  It is brutal and appalling how Canada’s own RCMP is once again attacking tribes on their own lands for another pipeline.  The violent assaults and aggressive arrests of women, elders, other tribal members and journalists is wrong.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a statement recently at COP-26 ‘Canada will take a leadership role in the fight against climate change.’  Are these actions which once again allow a pipeline company to violate nature, Indigenous rights and further create global carbon emissions the way Canada leads?  Whether it is Trans-Canada in BC, or Enbridge Line 3 – these projects are subject to environmental review.  “Reconciliation will not come at the barrel of a gun.”

We agree with the call of Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, Union of BC Indian Chiefs, for BC and Canada to uphold Indigenous Title and Rights – including the right to self-determination, and to institute a moratorium on fossil fuel expansion in the wake of clear and present climate catastrophe.  The entire world needs to meaningfully pursue decarbonization outside of natural gas options – let Canada lead by cancelling the permits for the Coastal Gas Link pipeline.
