We’ve worked so hard for this moment.
On Tuesday, Whatcom County Council passed groundbreaking land use policies, becoming one of the first refinery communities in the nation to permanently prohibit new fossil fuel facilities!
This historic step is a powerful example of what’s possible in other Northwest communities to protect health, safety, climate and our futures. The policy prohibits new fossil fuel refineries, coal plants, transshipment facilities, piers, and wharfs in the Cherry Point industrial zone ― home to two of the state’s five oil refineries. The regulations also require upgrade projects at existing refineries and terminals to undergo more rigorous environmental review and permitting processes.
This moment is years in the making. We’re here today because the community came together. Under the Lummi Nation’s leadership, we stopped what would have been the largest coal terminal in North America, we rallied after oil companies put in oil train terminals, and no matter what the fossil fuel industry attempted we never gave up.
If you’ve signed petitions, sent emails to council, attended meetings, or supported the campaign in any of the hundred other ways we’ve asked, this victory is because of you.
Your voices persuaded your community and elected leaders, your votes won election after election, and your work made a difference.
In solidarity,
Anna Doty
