Greeting, climate organizing community!

Grace here, your friendly PNW Regional Organizer with 350.org. I’m excited to share that we have a special guest joining us for this upcoming Monday’s weekly Conversations call.

Ingrid Archibald from Stand Earth will share with us a powerful new program called SAFE Cities, aimed at stopping fossil fuel development in our communities via land use policies. What is SAFE Cities? It’s the global, grassroots movement of communities Standing Against Fossil Fuel Expansion!

Ingrid and I had a good chat about this outstanding program and the valuable resources available to each of us through it. What I love about SAFE Cities is their approach of examining successful policies and case studies across the US to then design successful strategies to stop fossil fuel projects for good, which is essential for holding the “thin green line” here in Washington State for years to come.

“Fighting fossil fuel threats one at a time can feel like playing the world’s most exhausting and unfun game of whack-a-mole. One with no end in sight. If you’re in a community on the frontline of the fossil fuel industry you already know this well – no sooner have you defeated a massive coal terminal proposal then a tar sands pipeline pops up. Or you’re already fighting a refinery expansion or an oil-by-rail plan when industry comes again with plans to build a giant, explosive LNG facility. The SAFE Cities movement wants to end all that by blocking fossil fuel infrastructure projects before they’re even proposed – it’s time to stop playing defense, and go on the offensive.” – SAFE Cities

Also! Here are some of the key reflections + resources from this past week’s Conversation call. Thanks to all who joined for investing in growing this vibrant and resilient community of organizers!

  • Upcoming Social Justice Trainings – A Massive Running List compiled by 350.org

  • Workers and allies across the country are preparing to Strike for Black Lives on July 20th, with a national day of walkouts and worker actions to demand racial and economic justice, including in the workplace. Strike for Black Lives one-page summary, Partner packet, Map of actions, and National talking points

  • One of the key roles we hold as organizers for climate justice at local groups right now is in helping our leadership teams, members, and our bases make the connections between climate justice and racial justice

  • It’s important not to assume that everyone is at the same place in their learning on the connections between issues of environment, climate, and racism

  • A group of us decided that we’d like to commit to deepening our understanding of the complex issue of defunding the police, so we’re going to read The End of Policing by Alex S. Vitale, and plan to follow along the real-life case study of what is happening with defunding the Seattle PD.

Cheers,

Grace Hope
