We continue to dream and manifest our Black futures this February. This week’s focus is on creating a future for ourselves that is safe from excessive, brutal, and militarized police terror.
After millions took to the streets in protest last year to honor the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and too many others, Black communities are making major strides in defunding the police and investing in alternatives that actually keep us safe.
News cycles and policy makers may not acknowledge this, but cities across the country are considering proposals to defund the police. This is thanks to Black organizers and communities turning the national outcry to abolish policing into community-led initiatives to transform city, state, and federal government.
We know ending police violence requires a thoughtful, deliberate, and participatory approach. And it’s already begun.
