We’re gathering forces for Stop The Money Pipeline’s mass push to #DefundLine3!

Can 350Wenatchee help promote our Defund Line 3 campaign kick-off event? It’s this Tuesday evening, Feb 16th, at 5 PT / 6 MT / 7 CT / 8 ET
18 major banks have a $2.2 billion loan to Enbridge (the company behind Line 3) that is due for renewal on March 31st. Between now and then, we plan to put as much pressure as possible on banks to walk away from that loan, and walk away from Line 3.
Tara Houska’s piece in Common Dreams lays out the need and inspiration for this push, and we have created this Campaign Overview and Take Action Toolkit to make it as easy as possible for you to jump in. Right now, we’re hoping coalition partners will be able to promote the kick-off this Tuesday, Feb 16th ~ there are template emails, social posts, and graphics in the toolkit to support everyone getting the word out.
Below is 350 Seattle’s email, for example, and you can RT Tara’s tweet here about the campaign launch. Can you help spread the word about the kick-off event? #DefundLine3! Cheryl

Subject: Stop Line 3

Cheryl —

Stopping Line 3 is a matter of justice.

If built, the Line 3 pipeline would transport an estimated 760,000 barrels of carbon-intensive tar sands oil every day from Alberta, Canada to the shores of Lake Superior in Wisconsin. If built, Line 3 would destroy the sacred wild rice beds that the Anishinaabe people depend on for their food, culture, and way of life; it would release as much climate pollution as 50 new coal-fired power plants; it would endanger more than 800 waterways.

That’s why bold Water Protectors have been putting their bodies on the line to stop construction of this colonial pipeline: blocking construction with pianos, locking themselves inside sections of the pipeline, and blockading entrances to construction sites.

In solidarity with the fight to stop Line 3, the Stop the Money Pipeline coalition announced a major new campaign this week: #DefundLine3.

As Tara Houska, the founder of Indigenous frontline resistance camp, Giniw Collective, wrote in a Common Dreams piece announcing the launch of the campaign: “Now is the time for us to defund the White Supremacist, carbon bomb that is Line 3.”

350 Seattle is excited to join the campaign to stop the money pipeline to Line 3. Here’s how we plan to do so.

On March 31st, 18 banks have a $2.2 billion loan to Enbridge, the company behind Line 3, that is due for renewal. Every week till then, Stop the Money Pipeline and its 150+ coalition partners will be issuing a different call to action that helps put pressure on those banks. You’ll be asked to send direct emails to CEOs, call board members, take part in Covid-safe street protests, participate in projection actions, join online rallies, and much more.

If enough of us create pressure with these actions, the companies funding Line 3 will walk away from this toxic tar sands pipeline.

There are two actions that you can take right now to join the campaign.

  1. RSVP for the #DefundLine3 Campaign Kick-Off event on Tuesday, February 16th at 5 PST / 6 MST / 7 CST / 8 EST. At the campaign kick-off event, Anishinaabe frontline leaders Tara Houska and Taysha Martineau will share stories from the frontlines, and organizers will walk through the campaign plan step-by-step, let you know how you can participate at every stage, and give you the tools you need to get involved.
  2. Click here to send the CEOs of 18 major banks a message that they MUST walk away from Enbridge and Line 3 on March 31st.

Your email will go directly to the inboxes of the CEOs at JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, CitiBank, and the fifteen other banks funding Line 3. This action is a first step you can take to send a direct message to Wall Street: Walk away from Line 3 or there will be consequences.

We’re excited to join this major national campaign; we hope you will be, too. Together, we can build a movement powerful enough that will #StopLine3.

In solidarity
