I hope this finds you well. Even in these trying times, the backers of a controversial fracked gas-to-methanol refinery are still targeting Kalama and the lower Columbia River as a fossil fuel export hub. But Columbia Riverkeeper and our allies aren’t giving an inch; clean air, clean water, and a healthy climate are always worth protecting.
Riverkeeper and our allies, represented by Earthjustice, just filed our opening legal brief in a federal court case challenging the Kalama methanol refinery. You can read the brief at this link.
We are challenging the Trump administration’s approval of the Kalama methanol refinery—in violation of the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the National Environmental Policy Act. Riverkeeper’s attorneys, and our counsel at Earthjustice, intend to hold the Trump administration accountable and protect the Columbia River and our climate from fracked gas and fossil fuel export. If successful, our lawsuit would deny federal permits and subsidies to the Kalama methanol refinery.
As our communities confront many pressing issues, we also cannot allow new fossil fuel infrastructure that will lock us into a future dominated by pollution and climate change.
Please consider making a donation today. Your support for Columbia Riverkeeper’s work is powering a cleaner river and a healthier climate!
P.S. Get ready: The Washington Dept. of Ecology is about to open an important public comment period about the Kalama methanol refinery’s climate pollution. We’ll let you know when and how to make your voice heard.
