This coalition was unstoppable in August. We released a new comprehensive report that exposes the dangers of methane gas and NW Natural’s misinformation campaign. Many of our coalition members were behind a years-long campaign against the dangerous Zenith Oil Storage Facility and last month they won when the City of Portland decided to put its community first and deny Zenith new authorizations. And just last week, Pembina forfeited four crucial local land use permits that are required to construct the failing Jordan Cove LNG export terminal and fracked gas pipeline. Read more about these crucial wins and the work our coalition members continue to do to organize against fracked gas infrastructure and environmental racism below.
As always, Power Past Fracked Gas invites all of its coalition members to use this form to provide future newsletter submissions. Please submit your updates by the 28th of each month in order for them to be included in the following month’s newsletter. We look forward to continuing to highlight all of the incredible work of our coalition members and to providing additional ways for us to all stay connected and plugged into the work. And make sure to follow the coalition on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
Campaign Updates ![]() New Report Exposes the Dangers of Methane Gas & NW Natural’s Misinformation Campaign
A new comprehensive report titled, “Methane Gas: Health, Safety, and Decarbonization,” was released to the public and to elected and appointed officials in Oregon and Washington, including the Oregon Public Utility Commission and the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission. The report is supported by 64 organizations from around the Pacific Northwest as a means to curtail confusion created by NW Natural and other fossil fuel entities’ purposeful misinformation campaigns targeting elected officials and the public. ![]() Portland Puts Its Community First & Refuses New Authorizations for Zenith Oil Storage Facility
The City of Portland has denied a Land Use Compatibility Statement (LUCS), declaring that Zenith’s oil-by-rail storage and transfer facility in NW Portland is inconsistent with the City’s land use rules. The LUCS process gave the City the opportunity to exercise authority over Zenith to protect residents and the climate, and the City chose to put its community first. This decision comes after years of grassroots organizing by community members (including many members within the PPFG coalition) against the oil transportation facility. ![]() Southern Oregon Communities Keep Winning Against #JordanCove LNG
After years of hard work, our communities’ efforts to oppose Jordan Cove LNG are working! As of last week, Pembina has forfeited four crucial local land use permits that are required to construct the failing Jordan Cove LNG export terminal and fracked gas pipeline. If Pembina chooses to move Jordan Cove LNG forward, it would need to restart the entire land use permitting process — which takes years. You can read more about this exciting win here. Jordan Cove LNG lacks the state and local permits it needs to move forward, but the company still has approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) — which Rogue Climate and other organizations are challenging in court. ![]() Urge President Biden to Appoint an Environmental Justice Champion to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission
There’s an open seat on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and President Biden must appoint an environmental justice champion to help protect communities and the climate from fossil fuel development. 450+ organizations are asking him to. Will you call your senator to request President Biden appoints a FERC commissioner who will put the health and safety of communities first? Oregonians – Wyden is the chair of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources that oversees FERC, so do give him a call! ![]() Let’s Make the Salish Sea Cruise Free
Did you know massive cruise ships burn 30-50 gallons of fossil fuels for each mile traveled!? As we look for ways to rapidly decrease the use of fracked gas and oil, this form of highly-polluting non-essential luxury travel is a good place to start! Check out this letter signed by Power Past Fracked Gas and two dozen other organizations urging Seattle to begin the transition to a cruise-free Salish Sea. Take action and amplify the message with this handy toolkit!
![]() Tell Tacoma City Council to Protect Ancestral Tideflats
After four years of public outcry, Tacoma City Council will soon be voting on permanent fossil fuel regulations for the ancestral tideflats of the Puyallup Tribe (aka Port of Tacoma). Will they finally close the loophole allowing expansion for existing businesses or will they pass a “ban” with so many exemptions it’s effectively useless? Tacoma already has dozens of toxic Superfund sites, some of the worst air in the country and the climate emergency is only intensifying–help demand regulations that prioritize justice, health and future generations. Personalize a message here!
Solidarity Requests ![]() Get engaged with the #FreeThemAll Movement
La Resistencia plans to shut down Washington State’s privately-owned detention center as part of a broader national movement to end immigration detention. Follow the movement to #FreeThemAll, and urge decision makers to stop the transfers that are spreading Covid, stop deportations, and free people waiting for immigration and asylum hearings.
The Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) has an infamous reputation of human rights violations, poor medical care, poor nutrition and is located in the toxic industrial zone known today as the Port of Tacoma, on the ancestral tideflats of the Puyallup Tribe.
