Extinction Rebellion National Day of Action a Success
XR activists launched a day of action all over the country, Monday the 21st as part of the We Want to Live campaign. Our Portland action did not disappoint, featuring a Red Rebel Brigade and bridge barricade.
Portland Blocks Off Part of Bridge as Part of We Want to Live Action
Activists gathered around the Salmon Street Fountain on the Westside for a short rally. After the Red Rebels arrived, and a few speeches were given, Rebels headed to the bridge to shut down a lane of traffic. The ensuing rally on the bridge included flyers, and music.
The police decided not to arrest anyone as long as it remained a peaceful protest, so the activists cleaned up and departed before nightfall.
Channel 2 news live streamed the event to about 60k Facebook followers. There were also several news spots throughout the day where the protest was featured.
XR Co-Founder Roger Hallam Released From Prison
The infamous co-founder of XR, Roger Hallam, has shown his commitment and passion for environmental change time and time again. His latest demonstration led to his, along with four others, arrests in late August. Hallam was released in London four weeks after the detainment took place. The action itself ended as planned, with chosen activists arrested and detained in the name of environmental awareness. The need for revision of human interaction with the environment becomes more urgent each day.
These five, self-less XR participants knew their obligation to protect our Earth and on August 26th of 2020 they announced it to the world. Some thought the arrest would deter motivation for environmental activists, but activists across the planet have not been so easily deterred in the past. These demonstrations are the result of humans desperate for the destruction of our Earth to terminate. Roger Hallam will not stop, Extinction Rebellion will not stop, and we will see more of these meaningful arrests in the future.
