The Trump Administration is working to allow fossil fuel companies to ship dangerous fracked gas through our communities. A recent executive order revealed plans to remove the restrictions on transporting liquified natural gas (LNG) on 100-car unit trains. LNG is a highly flammable fossil fuel product; in 2014, an explosion and fire at an LNG facility in Eastern Washington caused hundreds of people to evacuate their homes and injured five workers.
As Congressman Peter DeFazio, Chair of the House Transportation Committee, stated recently, “This plan is beyond absurd. Should even one tank car get punctured, the results could be devastating.”
Thanks to public pressure, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) extended their comment period and is accepting additional comments on their draft review of LNG-by-rail until August 7th.Read more about this proposal and send in your comment today.
At the same time, we have an important local opportunity this month to protect our region from a proposed LNG facility. Even as Washington begins a transition to 100% clean electricity, Puget Sound Energy continues its plans for an 8-million-gallon fracked gas facility on the Tacoma Tideflats. Despite opposition from the Puyallup Tribe, over 80 community organizations, and Governor Inslee, PSE has moved forward with this project without a permit from the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA).
PSCAA recently announced that it plans to grant this permit (the last one PSE needs before the facility is approved) despite a flawed analysis that ignores the latest science on methane leaks and climate change. A public hearing will be held on August 27th.
