In 2016, 350.org and many of you were involved in the Break Free actions across the world. Thousands of people took nonviolent direct action to confront the fossil fuel industry. The largest action that summer was actually part of a multi-year effort in Germany called Ende Gelände (“this far and no further”) – where nearly 4,000 people occupied one of the largest coal mines in Europe. Since then they’ve kept growing with bigger and bolder actions every year, and just recently forced Germany to announce a complete phase-out of coal power by 2038.

Some of the key organizers from Ende Gelände are touring the U.S. sharing stories about their work, inspiring us to think about how mass action can be used effectively, and meeting with organizers across the country to strategize about using these tools in our campaigns and organizing.Rising Tide North America is organizing the tour, and a number of 350 local groups are hosting events in their town. You can see a full list (more updates coming daily!) of tour events around the country here and at the bottom of this email.

On Monday, March 11th, our monthly Local Groups webinar will be a presentation from the Ende Gelände organizers about their work and organizing models, and how effective mass nonviolent direct action has been to win major victories for climate justice. They will share some stories and information about how their strategies worked, and we’ll have Q&A too.
