La Resistencia, an immigrant justice organization part of the Power Past Fracked Gas network that advocates for the closure of the ICE detention facility in Tacoma, has for years led action to support those detained at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC)
The fight to close the NWDC is connected to the fight against Puget Sound Energy’s fracked gas facility — both sited at the Tacoma Tideflats, on the ancestral lands of the Puyallup Tribe. The Puyallup Tribe and near-port communities, including the people detained inside the the NWDC, are living in a polluted industrial zone and are subjected to contaminated water, contaminated air, and the resulting health impacts.
There have been a number of toxic fires that have occurred in the industrial area at the Tideflats and time and again the city of Tacoma fails to properly warn communities about the health risks from these fires, or to provide any medical relief. The people detained in cages at the NWDC do not have the ability to avoid these health risks. And the Puyallup Tribe — culturally and spiritually connected to these lands and waters since Time Immemorial — cannot simply walk away from the pollution surrounding them.
The NWDC is scheduled to shut down, but not for several years. In the meantime, it is crucial that the people unjustly detained there are not transferred, but allowed to return to their loved ones.
We must prioritize and respect all life to create a more just and livable future. The message is simple: Stop the transfers. Empty the Northwest Detention Center and free them all.
