Hey Jeanne,

In the midst of the global pandemic, TC Energy is moving ahead with construction of Keystone XL.

Just last week, the Promise to Protect coalition delivered over 45,000 petition signatures to the Governor of Montana urging him to halt construction activity of the cross-border section of the Keystone XL pipeline. Thousands of you signed knowing that families and local communities are suffering due to COVID-19. But while most of our country is sheltering in place and bracing for the emotional and economic fallout of this crisis, TC Energy (fka Transcanada) got the green light to move forward with construction and bring workers into Indigenous and rural communities with limited access to health resources.

TC Energy confirmed what we already knew by bringing workers in to build “man camps” and starting construction during this pandemic: they value their profit over people. We didn’t think TC Energy could be more evil, but this is greed taken to a whole new level. Now more than ever, we have to keep hitting TC Energy where it hurts by stopping insurance companies that are enabling construction of Keystone XL. Liberty Mutual, you are up next.

Will you join our fight to stop Liberty Mutual from insuring destructive tar sands projects like Keystone XL?

Fossil fuel projects need three things to continue wreaking havoc: political support, financial backing, and insurance. Liberty Mutual has already provided a $15.6 million dollar bond to cover construction risks in South Dakota along the route. Not only does Liberty Mutual insure Keystone XL, but they also have at least 8.9 billion dollars invested in tar sands projects with fossil fuel companies.

We’ve won this fight for the last 12 years by targeting the federal government, state government, following frontline Indigenous leadership and working together. We’re going after TC Energy, the financial backers, state governments, and any bank, politician, and insurance company who plays a critical role in trying to build Keystone XL.

Tell Liberty Mutual to stop insuring the Keystone XL Pipeline and all tar sands projects immediately.

Insurance companies are meant to protect us from risk, but Liberty Mutual is protecting TC Energy’s climate destroying pipeline instead. If we can put enough pressure on Liberty Mutual to stop insuring all tar sands projects like Keystone XL, that’s one more step toward a fossil free future.

Stand with us against the tar sands.

Until we win,

Nkenge Abidemi
