Hey Jeanne,

Since Minnesota police murdered George Floyd in May while the world was in lockdown from COVID-19, the conversation and demand to defund police have continued to rise in the media, public consciousness, and across movements for justice.

Now, in collaboration with Black Youth Project 100 (BYP100) Atlanta and DC chapters, our second Solidarity School will explore how the demand to defund police is the fight for climate justice. Will you join us next Wednesday, September 9 at 5pmPT/8pmET?

The momentum of powerful uprisings continues: from Kenosha, Wisconsin, where police shot Jacob Blake in the back seven times while his children watched from the car to Rochester, New York where the footage was released showing police murdering Daniel Prude in the wake of a mental health crisis. And there is still no justice for Breonna Taylor, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, or Trayvon Martin, Brayla Stone, Atatiana Jefferson… the list of human life goes on and on.

Responses from politicians to this racism, police brutality and anti-Black violence have been dangerously inadequate. This comes in the wake of increasing climate disasters — from hurricanes in the Gulf to fires in the West — hitting Black communities, Indigenous Peoples, and families and workers of color first and worst.

When 5000+ of us united for a webinar on Dismantling White Supremacy in the wake of George Floyd’s murder, we promised to continue political education and strengthening connections between movements for climate and racial justice. This is one crucial step in us keeping that promise, together on the long path toward our collective liberation.

Two recent reports found that fossil fuel companies directly bankroll police funds, and that white supremacists and militias have infiltrated police across the US. Police and filthy fossil fuel companies share racist, colonialist, and fascist roots because they were both designed to further systems of white supremacy. It’s time to divest from these systems of white supremacy.

It’s up to all of us to rise in solidarity to protect the rights and dignity of Black life everywhere. RSVP for Solidarity School #2 next Weds, September 9 to dive into: Defund, Abolish & Divest: Climate, Racial & Economic Justice.

In solidarity,

Clarissa
