Hello Community. The past couple of weeks have felt heavy when tuning into the national political arena. As an organization dedicated to stewarding our environment through waste reduction, we are deeply saddened by the unilateral moves being made by the current administration to cut funding to conservation, environmental protection and justice programs. Elimination of federal DEI initiatives are equally disturbing. Waste Loop remains committed to serving all people residing in the Wenatchee Valley and providing waste reduction support in an equitable manner. We urge you, our community, to continue to show up, to join us, to work towards a more environmentally resilient and socially inclusive community together.
February 4th, 4-7pm: Leavenworth Community Engagement Night, Festhalle: Waste Loop will be tabling at this open house format event, hosted by the City of Leavenworth. There will be display tables where you can learn more about important city projects, get answers to your questions from those working on the projects, and provide your input. Other local organizations will be tabling as well. There is free parking in the adjacent lots (Aasgard, Blewett, Colchuck) after 4pm that evening.
February 10th, 10am-1pm: Love the Planet, Wenatchee Valley College, Jack and Edna Maguire Conference Center: Join the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust and Wenatchee Valley College Sustainability Committee for an engaging and educational event to learn about different ways that you can show love to the earth. Learn about recycling, composting, and trail etiquette and participate in the upcycled Valentine’s card station to help you prepare for Valentine’s Day in a sustainable way!
February 25th, 12-1:30pm and 5-6:30pm: Community Seed Swap, Wenatchee River Institute: It’s time to start garden planning and getting your seeds growing! If you have seeds to share & trade – great! If you don’t have seeds but are interested in gardening and getting seeds to get you started – come anyway! Let’s kick off the spring season by gathering together!
Put the end cuttings of your leftover produce items in water and watch them regrow! Leave the container on the counter and change the water every few days. You may need to switch to a taller vessel to support the produce as it grows. Plants will grow well in water but if you feel like it, you can plant them in soil once they have grown strong roots.
This can be done with the ends of lettuce, scallions/green onions, celery, herbs, and more!
Waste Loop is excited to share the completion of two new resources for local businesses looking to reduce their waste footprint. The Towards Zero Waste Food Service and Hospitality Toolkits are bothavailable to download for free (English and Spanish versions available) from our website. We hope they will serve as a valuable resource for business owners, managers, and staff who want to ‘green’ their business and move Towards Zero Waste.
Each toolkit provides waste reduction tips, local resources, and a step by step guide to support the transition towards zero waste in the food service and hospitality industries. In addition to the toolkits Waste Loop is excited to provide personal waste assessments and consulting services to Wenatchee Valley area businesses. Reach out to our Towards Zero Waste coordinator today to schedule a free site visit.
Waste Loop is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and our work depends on donations from the community. Donations go directly to supporting programs that promote earth stewardship and build resiliency in our community now and into the future.
