And we have a lot to celebrate––hundreds of thousands of phone calls and letters and knocks on doors that have helped keep American democracy going (if not precisely going strong). Tens of thousands of demonstrators have made bank funding for fossil fuels a national issue. Hundreds of millions of dollars for the Heat Pumps for Peace and Freedom program, which literally took defense money and saw it used for the true security that comes with tackling the climate crisis.
But what I’m really looking forward to is next year––we’re entering the Terrible Twos, and we are going to raise a ruckus like never before. We have chapters across America now, which is great because we have an election to win next year. And we have a fossil fuel industry to beat, beginning with the plans for massive buildout of exported natural gas. We’re going to win these fights, but it’s going to take all that we’ve got.
And along the way we’re going to show that the caricatures of older Americans are wrong. In fact, we got remarkable data this week to back up what we’ve been saying from the start: a new survey from the Environmental Voters Project shows that across America, older voters are the second most climate-conscious group, trailing only the youngest voters. (Read the report––it will charge you up). That’s why we partner with young people every chance we get: we can combine our structural power with their wonderful energy to make incredible change.
It is so much fun to get to work with y’all––we’ve caused great trouble already, and we’re just getting started.
