We are at a decisive moment in our battle against the climate crisis.
Our financial systems—created to foster prosperity and ensure stability—are instead enabling the destruction of our planet, our communities, and our future. The crux of the issue is the fossil fuel industry’s undue influence over our global economy.
This is where our own Federal Reserve, a member of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and one of 63 central banks worldwide, has a vital role to play. They hold the levers of our financial system, controlling the flow of money that fuels damaging fossil fuel exploration, expansion, and deforestation. It’s time we demand they use this influence responsibly.
The BIS Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the Basel Peoples Forum on Climate Justice and Financial Regulation are taking place from June 22-25. Frontline communities and activists from around the world—including from the Water Protector Legal Collective, an Indigenous-led law firm born out of the #NoDAPL movement protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) at Standing Rock—will be there to make our voices heard and deliver this petition. This is a crucial opportunity for us to show these financial gatekeepers that we stand united, and demand they protect our planetary stability.
Central bankers have the potential to be the defenders of planetary stability if they listen to our advocates in Basel and adopt a forward-looking, precautionary, human rights-centric approach.
Our demands are clear: End fossil finance. Uphold human rights. Prioritize environmental protection. Adopt a precautionary and forward-looking approach. Cancel colonial debt and repair the loss and damage caused by burning fossil fuels. Decolonize international finance.
Imagine a world where the BIS, the Federal Reserve, and other central banks regulate fossil finance out of existence. Imagine them leading the transition away from fossil fuels, safeguarding our climate, our communities, and our financial systems. They have the power to make this vision a reality. But they won’t act without pressure from us, from you.
Together, we can stand up, reclaim our power, and push for a financial system that works for all of us.
In Solidarity,
