Last week the air on the east coast was toxic, the sky was orange and smoky. For days, tens of millions of people were forced to breathe air that was literally poisonous. At one point, New York had the most polluted air of any city in the world.
This is what the climate crisis looks like. And it is what happens when banks like Citi, the world’s second-largest funder of fossil fuels, continues to bankroll coal, oil and gas expansion.
Fossil banks like Citi continue to pour money into the fossil fuel industry and have a huge part in fueling this crisis. Citi is responsible for more than $330 billion in funding to fossil fuel companies in the last seven years.
This poor air quality is especially hazardous for vulnerable groups like older adults, children, pregnant people, people with heart or lung disease, and those with disabilities. Also on our mind are the communities who cannot escape the wildfire smoke – outdoor workers, essential workers, our houseless neighbors, and anyone who must go outside during toxic conditions. More fossil fuel projects will only make the forest fires and air quality worse. As we fight for climate action, we must fight for a safe climate future that leaves no one behind.
Citi is among the banks involved in the massive expansion of LNG gas projects in the Gulf South. These projects are being dumped on communities with majority Black, Indigenous and communities of color who have had to endure chemical plants and refineries for decades with huge health and environmental consequences.
