Thank you to everyone who signed the petition, in overwhelming support of the Juliana v. U.S. climate youth, that was just delivered to the Department of Justice (DOJ). Now, take the next action to support these young climate leaders TODAY!
Today, the online petition, sponsored by the People vs. Fossil Fuels coalition, was digitally delivered to the DOJ and Attorney General Merrick Garland, demanding that Attorney General Garland end DOJ opposition to the children’s climate lawsuit, Juliana v. United States, proceeding to trial. John Beard, Founder and CEO of the Port Arthur Community Action Network, and youth leader Zanagee Artis, Founder and Executive Director, co-delivered this petition on behalf of the coalition, more than 255 leading organizations, and more than 50,000 individuals across the United States and around the world who signed the petition.
The petition was delivered shortly after Federal Judge Ann Aiken, of the U.S. District Court in Oregon, on June 1, 2023, granted the young plaintiffs’ motion to amend their complaint, putting their case back on track to trial. After eight years, evidence that indisputably proves the federal government’s knowing perpetuation of the climate crisis will come to light, in open court, and Judge Aiken will rule whether the U.S. energy system violates the youth’s constitutional rights.
The People vs. Fossil Fuels coalition, in coordination with Our Children’s Trust, is once again joining the Juliana 21 by hosting an action to directly email Attorney General Garland. In the coming days, it is possible that U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland and the U.S. Department of Justice will use an obscure legal tool championed by the Trump Administration – a Petition for Writ of Mandamus – to once again impede these young Americans from having their evidence heard and considered by a judge in open court.
Join us in urging the Biden Administration’s Department of Justice to NOT use this extreme tool – a Petition for Writ of Mandamus – and end its efforts to further delay justice for these young people!
