Earlier this week, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation raided the headquarters of the Atlanta Solidarity Fund, a community bail fund that has been providing support to protesters since before the 2020 Uprisings.
Three bail fund organizers were arrested and charged with financial offenses in a prosecution intended to suppress resistance to the construction of #CopCity, the massive, $90 million+ police facility that will serve as a training ground for cops across the country and around the world in how to more violently suppress protests and movements challenging the carceral state.
According to the Atlanta Community Press Collective, the charges brought by the State of Georgia against the bail fund organizers include one count of “Records and reports of certain currency transactions” and one count of “fraudulent, misrepresenting, misleading activities regarding charitable solicitations.” Bail fund organizers are facing penalties of up to $500,000, 20 years in prison, or both.
We’re urgently reaching out to those fighting for justice and civil rights to say: the time to speak up is NOW! If you’re an individual or organization that:
⭐️Supports protesters & wants to preserve our right to protest;
⭐️Hosts a bail fund;
⭐️Fights for & cares about racial, gender, sexual, or climate justice; or
⭐️Organizes for divestment from policing and punishment, and investment in community-based strategies for safety,
Then we need you to raise the alarm and take action to fight back against #CopCity! Here are some ways you can get involved:
➡Tell the City Council to take another vote; it’s possible for the Mayor and City Council to reverse the decision. Keep up the pressure and call/email City Council and Mayoral incumbents and candidates! See the call script & more here.
