On Sunday, community leaders and activists in San Francisco showed up outside the biggest insurance industry conference of the year and painted a massive street mural.
They were demanding that insurance giants like Chubb, Liberty Mutual, and Travelers stop insuring fossil fuel expansion projects and respect Indigenous rights.
The mural depicts a globe surrounded by creatures native to California and Alaska, as well as the fossil fuel extraction and climate disasters that are threatening ecosystems and communities across the region. Created in part with paint containing ashes of homes destroyed by wildfires in California and Colorado, it also featured a clear message to big U.S. insurers: Don’t Risk Our World, Insure Our Future.
This powerful coalition of more than a dozen Indigenous, environmental justice, and climate groups came together to ensure that the 10,000+ insurance professionals attending the conference – ironically named RISKWORLD – know the critical role that the insurance industry plays in enabling fossil fuel projects that harm communities and fuel the climate crisis.
From oil and gas drilling in the Arctic to tar sands extraction, the U.S. insurance sector is recklessly propping up dirty energy infrastructure. At the same time, it is jacking up rates and even abandoning communities experiencing devastating climate impacts like wildfires and floods.
After you’ve sent your email, take a moment to share photos of the incredible mural on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. And stay tuned for additional ways to move these insurance giants: the conference runs through Wednesday, and we hear that the activities have only just begun.
In solidarity,
– Stop the Money Pipeline team
