Amazonia — also known as the Amazon rainforest — is experiencing rapid deforestation due to gas and oil extraction. These destructive fossil fuel activities are made possible by the funding from big banks.
Financing fossil fuels in the Amazonia leads to oil spills and contamination of the water and land of Indigenous communities, destruction of biodiversity, and the escalation of worldwide climate catastrophe. Meanwhile, Citi was just revealed as the world’s #2 financier of oil and gas in the Amazonia — financing over $1.8 BILLION worth of Amazonia-destroying activities
A recent report from Stand.earth revealed that $20 billion in Amazon oil and gas was directly financed by 160 banks in the past 15 years. Out of those 160 banks, Citi was named as the second biggest financier and the bank with the largest influence in the region, involved in over 1290 Amazon-exposed fossil fuel financing deals. This bank has been creating climate chaos—all while professing to be a climate leader.
The Amazonia has already been forced to a tipping point due to forest destruction caused by industrial activities. The Indigenous Peoples of Amazonia have put out an urgent call to protect 80% of the region by 2025. But companies are ignoring calls from Indigenous leaders and activists, so we need you to join us in amplifying their demands until it reaches Citi executives: Amazonia is the last place oil and gas extraction should be happening.
