I’m not going to lie to you, Tuesday was magical. It was a day of connection, hope, joy, art, and disruption. Third Actors and over 50 partners organized 102 demonstrations in 30 states and the District of Columbia. This day showed how powerful it is when we work together.
In D.C., the Rocking Chair Rebellion made its debut with a 24-hour vigil and bank blockade. In Portland, Bigfoot ripped up a credit card. In Seattle, activists were up on ladders. Despite the rain in California and snow in Reno, activists still showed up. And there were tons of folks who sent in videos and showed up in person to cut up their credit cards and to deliver their messages to the banks: stop funding fossil fuels.
There are just too many actions to name all of them here. But if you want to see more, check out the #StopDirtyBanks hashtag or @ThirdActOrg on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to see all the creative ways that people participated in this day.
There was incredible coverage: the New York Times, the Guardian, the Washington Post, Democracy Now, and tons of local media outlets wrote about this day and made the connection between carbon and cash. This is a huge step towards getting the mainstream public aware of the financial sector’s role in the climate crisis.
We still have lots of work ahead: shareholder season has begun and people have already started to pressure their state’s pension funds to vote the right way on upcoming climate resolutions and the Earth Week of Climate Justice Art and Action is right around the corner, April 15th through 25th.
But let’s take this moment to celebrate! We are massively grateful to all the folks who participated, partners who lent a hand, and to Third Act for leading this effort. Together we accomplished so much.
In solidarity, Sarah and the Stop the Money Pipeline team
