The CEO of Costco, the third largest retailer in the world, has agreed to meet with us to discuss Costco’s role in stopping Citibank from funding climate destruction!
This meeting is a direct result of your efforts and follows a year when tens of thousands of people, including you, have demanded that Costco clean up its credit card with dirty Citibank. Together we have delivered our message to Costco in creative, friendly, and fun ways: From signing petitions, to gathering signatures at Costco warehouses and speaking to branch managers, to sending emails and making calls, writing postcards, posting on social media, writing op-eds, and showing up to protest. Coming off a recent action at Costco HQ (where six brave Costco members and shareholders were arrested for waiting to speak to the CEO), it’s clear that Costco is paying attention and they’re nervous.
We could not have gotten this meeting without every single one of you.
I want to be clear: while this is a big opportunity for our campaign, our work doesn’t end with this meeting. We need to show Costco that its members and shareholders overwhelmingly agree that it’s Costco’s duty to account for the impact – on people and the planet – of its relationship with Citibank.
In this meeting, we will show Costco the breadth of support among its members for cleaning up its credit card, we will illuminate just how dirty Citi really is, how Citi’s bad rep could tarnish Costco’s, and we will push Costco to meet with Citi to voice these concerns directly to Citibank. We will also bring the thousands of postcards with messages about why Costco should drop dirty Citibank that were handwritten by folks like you and we will deliver them directly to Costco’s CEO in-person.
With extreme weather like Hurricane Helene destroying lives, livelihoods, and homes, and disasters like this becoming more frequent and deadly, it’s more important than ever to hold banks accountable and push them to shift rapidly from dirty to clean energy. Costco can push Citibank to do just that. As the third largest retailer in the world and a credit card partner of Citibank’s, Costco can use its leverage as a large client to push Citiabnk to stop funding fossil fuel expansion, or can drop Citibank as a partner all together.
Plan on hearing from us soon on the outcome of our meeting 🙂
In solidarity,
– Sarah, Stop the Money Pipeline
