Citibank uses its sponsorship of sporting events like the Citi DC Open tennis tournament to prop up its image as a “community-friendly” bank. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Citi is one of the largest global financiers of fossil fuels, responsible for $332 billion for the fossil fuel industry since 2016. Citi is directly contributing to the destruction of our planet and our communities.
That’s why activists with Climate Defiance and Third Act disrupted the Citi Open yesterday, and unfurled a banner that said “Citi: Serving Climate Destruction” — urging Citi to stop funding fossil fuels, and calling on the ATP to cut ties with Citi.
Citi is responsible for providing hundreds of billions in funding to companies like Exxon, Shell, Chevron, and Enbridge, companies that are continuing to build new pipelines, oil rigs, and power plants that will only make future climate impacts like wildfires worse.
People have been calling on dirty Wall Street banks to stop pouring money into fossil fuels for years. It’s time for them to listen.
In solidarity,
– Austin Miller, Stop the Money Pipeline team
