Some wonderful news to report this week: not only did Third Actors show up big for the March to End Fossil Fuels, they were able to see very fast fruit from recent labors.
You’ll recall last Friday that I asked everyone across the country to write California Gov. Gavin Newsom, urging him to sign Senate Bill 253 that would force big companies to report all their carbon emissions, even ones from down their supply chain, and Senate Bill 261 to require companies to report climate-related financial risks. (Banks, say). More than 6,000 of you responded in less than 24 hours, directing moving personal comments at the Governor. He announced over the weekend that he would sign the bills, and sweetened the deal by filing suit on behalf of the world’s fifth largest economy against the biggest fossil fuel companies for lying about the climate crisis for decades.
“These folks had this information and lied to us, and we could have staved off some of the most significant consequences,” Newsom told reporters. “It’s shameful. It sickens you to your core.” Indeed it does––but this week’s victories remind us that, as so often, when we fight we win. You played a real part in getting something massive done, so many thanks for taking the time.

For an upcoming issue of YES! Magazine focused on elders, they seek first-time activists who became mobilized after age 50. People We Love is a regular feature that showcases inspiring individuals. The goal is to spotlight a diverse group working on various causes like climate, democracy, education, and more. Ideal nominees not only attended protests but also went on to organize in different communities, foster connections between similar groups, or even lead direct actions. Coast-to-coast, last weekend saw a remarkable turnout of Third Act activists. Third Actors from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, DC, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Connecticut turned out in New York City. Meanwhile, Third Actors joined local marches across California and Washington. And nearly 4,000 of you signed the petition to urge President Biden to phase out fossil fuels from home!
We flooded the streets with creativity, determination––and joy. And so long as we keep bringing such raucous, positive, unstoppable energy to this fight, I think we have a real chance to succeed.
