Yesterday, a senior member of Citibank’s security team punched a nonviolent climate activist in the face. The activist, Eren Can Ileri, was filming the protest against Citi’s financing of coal, oil, and gas when he was attacked without warning or cause.
Eren, a climate policy expert as well as a committed direct action activist, was taken to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a concussion and a sprained wrist.
Can you take 3 actions to demand that Citi stops the violence toward nonviolent activists and comes back to the table to talk with the Summer of Heat campaign?
Since our last meeting on July 3rd, Citi has failed to respond to three requests for a meeting. It seems that Citi would rather have its security attack us than sit down and talk with us.
Yesterday’s assault was not the first incidence of violence from Citi employees in the face of the nonviolent protests. There have been high-profile incidents of Citi employees physically and verbally abusing protestors, and, in recent weeks, Citi’s security team has targeted Summer of Heat leaders with unwarranted arrests and charges.
Demand that Citi stops the violence against climate activists and instead meets with the Summer of Heat campaign.
All three of these actions should take you less than fifteen minutes – and they will be a huge help to the campaign.
Together, we can get Citibank to be the first major bank to end financing for fossil fuels – and that will be a huge step toward ending fossil fuels for good.
