Third Act’s staff has been offline this week for a summer recess––but my goodness are we excited to get back to work!
After weeks of sobering headlines, I’m buoyed by the hopeful enthusiasm I see building behind Kamala Harris. This transition symbolizes the power of legacy (🥥🌴), much like the “I’m here for my grandchildren” signs you’ve held at Summer of Heat actions. I have such faith in Third Actors continuing to do what you do best: showing up, bringing in new people, and creating joyful momentum.
This month was good practice and a testament to our strength. I got chills when I saw the press coverage and pictures roll in from the actions at Citibank HQ in NYC and at other bank branches across the country, calling on them to rethink the billions they’re investing in expanding fossil fuels. Your distributed efforts on the ground had a ripple effect online, collectively generating upwards of 200 pieces of media with a reach of 329K views and 46K engagements (likes, comments, and shares on social media). Proving that together, we are so much greater and more impactful than the sum of our parts.
Recently I was asked how to activate older adults on climate issues. The truth is, you’re all doing it beautifully everyday. Our task on the digital communications team is to build a loud enough megaphone to amplify your skillful work. With 70% of Americans aware of the urgent need for climate action, your participation is crucial to galvanizing enough of them to push for meaningful change.
As we barrel towards election season, let’s make every day and action count. There’s no time to waste.

Elders Week Surpasses All Expectations
From Maine to the Bay Area, Third Actors came out in droves to protest fossil fuel funding. And boy, did we show up! Third Act Minnesota held their largest protest yet, with over 50 Third Actors and other allies demonstrating at the Wells Fargo Minneapolis HQ. Bill’s mother, Peggy McKibben, joined Third Act Massachusetts in front of a Bank of America branch. Third Act Florida held an in-person social to learn about IRA funding coming to Florida and addressed 400 postcards to non-voting environmentalists. And so much more! Read on for more highlights from the Summer of Heat.
“Climate is a democracy issue. The reason we have democracy is because people want their lives to be better and we know that we’ve got to work together to make it so. What we breathe and how we live is absolutely a question of the kind of government we have.” –– Stacey Abrams
On July 9, we had the honor of hosting political leader and author Stacey Abrams for our All-In Call. In a compelling discussion with Third Act Lead Advisor Akaya Windwood and Third Act Founder Bill McKibben, Stacey shared her insights on navigating the current political climate and the vital role of voting in democracy. We were also joined by Third Actors Katherine Alford, Sheldon Pollock, Finn and Mary Beth Naim, who shared about direct actions in New York City and across the nation for Summer of Heat.
Urge the AARP Board to Choose a Leader Who Prioritizes Climate Action
The current CEO of AARP, Jo Ann Jenkins, is resigning. It’s crucial to appoint a new leader committed to climate action, to safeguard the health and financial security of older Americans. Take action bySeptember 1 to ensure AARP acts in the best interests of elders.
Demand Clean Energy Champions for the Tennessee Valley Authority
The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the largest U.S. public power utility, serves ten million people across seven states. Despite the benefits of clean energy, the TVA Board’s plan to expand fossil gas power plants and pipelines threatens President Biden’s climate goals. With three Board vacancies, it’s crucial to urge the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW) to appoint clean energy advocates.
