This morning, hundreds of Citibank workers were delayed getting into work. Why? Because a pod of orcas, a brass band, a group of faith leaders, a gaggle of scientists, and a group of activists engaging in a die-in blocked every entrance to the building.
There are 2 things you can do to amplify this action, right now.
This was one of the most powerful Summer of Heat actions yet. A group of faith leaders blocked a door, as did a group of climate scientists. The climate scientists were among the more than 750 scientists who wrote to Citi earlier this summer, urging them to end financing for fossil fuel expansion. A letter that Citi has completely ignored.
Beside the scientists, a group of young people calling out Citi’s financing of the atrocities in Palestine were chained to two wooden pipelines; a dozen people engaged in a die-in; and a troupe of orcas sunk “Citi’s Oil Tanker”. It was beautiful chaos of the very best kind.
It was also a moment of escalation for the campaign. Many activists refused to leave and were carried away from the doors by police; others chained themselves together, only leaving when the cops cut the chains to remove them.
This is the 32nd action targeting Citi in the last 87 days. It is the 28th civil disobedience action at Citi in less than three months. The police have already made more than 700 arrests of climate activists at Citibank this summer.
