Yesterday, while thousands of people were in the streets at over 100 #StopDirtyBanks actions – Sempra Energy secured financing for a billion-dollar Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project in Port Arthur, Texas, which is our friend John Beard’s backyard. 55,000 people call Port Arthur home, 43% of whom are Black or African American and 32% of whom are Latinx.
Guess who is financing the project. None other than Citibank and JP Morgan Chase, among others.
“This Sempra FID is just another nail in the coffin for historically overburdened communities like mine, who struggle daily with chronic health issues while these corporations continue to exploit us for profit. We say enough is enough, and call not just for divestment, but an end to industry wide financing of genocide, of the murder of peoples in the Gulf South, and world wide. We will fight back; We refuse to be sacrificed!” said John Beard, CEO, Port Arthur Community Action Network
You may remember John Beard, the founder of Port Arthur Community Action Network (PACAN) as he recently spoke on our webinar about defunding environmental racism in the Gulf South. Right now on the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast, communities of color who are already overburdened by pollution, are resisting an unprecedented buildout of dangerous liquefied natural gas (LNG) export projects, largely financed by major global banks like Citi & Chase.
These LNG facilities release greenhouse gasses and toxic chemicals into the air – and we know that Sempra Energy’s other projects in nearby states have been accused of consistently releasing illegally high levels of the chemicals benzene and sulfur dioxide.
