Dear Jeanne,

Throughout Third Act’s first year, you’ve heard how the big four banks—Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo—are bankrolling the climate crisis. After the banks’ infuriatingly disappointing participation in the Egypt Climate Conference, where they worked to weaken already-inadequate climate targets and threatened to leave the Net Zero Banking Alliance, it’s time we raise the pressure on these dirty banks!

 

As we prepare holiday cards and wishes for peace on earth and goodwill to all, please write to the CEOs of the big four banks and tell them to make a healthy New Year’s Resolution: No investments in new fossil fuels.   

 

We are gearing up together for the Banking on our Future Day of Action on March 21, 2023, and escalating our actions on the banks. Many of you have been meeting with bank branch managers, asking them to deliver messages to their leadership that the banks should stop financing fossil fuels – thank you!

 

Now is a moment for you to write directly to the Bank CEOs and edit the letter to tell them personally why you don’t want the banks to use your money to invest in dirty energy projects that are wrecking our planet and our future.

 

During the holidays and new year, I take time to reflect on the past year and to consider the year ahead. Making my holiday wishes for peace on earth and goodwill to all come true will require that the big four dirty banks stop financing fossil fuel projects that are worsening climate change, polluting our air and water, and risking our children and grandchildren’s health and future.

 

Please join me in sending a holiday card to the CEOs of Bank of America, Chase, Citibank, and Wells Fargo and tell them: Make your New Year’s Resolution to end financing of fossil fuels and live-up to your net-zero pledges.   As with personal New Year’s resolutions to lose bad habits or invest in one’s health, these banks should lose carbon pollution and invest in a renewable future.

 

Wouldn’t you prefer that the banks invest in the gifts of clean energy, rather than lumps of dirty coal, oil, or gas?
