Wall Street is enabling a company with a business model that’s incompatible with a climate-safe transition and that relies on stolen land, forced labor, bribery and environmental destruction to turn a profit.
That’s why ongoing climate disruptions in New York and around the world have pressured Bank of America and Citi (two of the largest financiers of fossil fuels) to stop investing in the destructive and extractive industries that are fueling climate chaos. JBS – the world’s largest animal protein company – is a greenwashing giant. It claims it will be Net-Zero by 2040 but has no credible plan to transition or address its excessive greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation or biodiversity impacts. In just 5 years, it has increased greenhouse gas emissions by 51% and it has a deforestation footprint of 1.5 million hectares through its supply chain.
Corporate greed is driving landgrabbing, deforestation and forced labor in the Brazilian Amazon. Although JBS promised to rid their supply chain of deforestation, slave labor and landgrabbing in 2009 after being caught out, they have failed to do so. Investigations as recent as 2022 show they continue to source cattle from farmers who operate illegally, using forced labor and grazing their cattle on Indigenous Territories. This behavior is unacceptable, illegal, and contravenes international human rights standards.
The big banks are making commitments to cut their greenhouse gas emissions to align with the Paris Climate Agreement and to respect human rights but are failing to follow through. Citi and Bank of America must put their money where their mouth is and stop funding companies that are harming people and the planet.
