The Biden administration is seriously considering using the Defense Production Act to help communities in Europe get off Russian gas and ramp up renewables – but we need to increase pressure on key decision-makers to make it happen. Will you send a message to John Kerry and Gina McCarthy and urge them to take action?
Do you feel that? It’s momentum starting to shift in our direction.
Last week, Stand.earth led an effort to coalesce 215 Indigenous, social justice, religious, and progressive groups around a letter to the White House. In it, we urged President Biden to invoke the Defense Production Act (DPA) to ramp up the deployment of renewable energy and send heat pumps to communities in Europe to end their dependency on Russian gas for heating.
Since then, we’ve seen outlets from all over the political spectrum pick up on this story, collectively reaching millions of people.
Even more importantly, our sources in the White House have confirmed that our letter was read by U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry and White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy. What’s more, the Washington Post reported that people in the White House are actively considering invoking the DPA to help get Europe off Russian gas with heat pumps.
This is huge, so let me say it one more time: the people who could actually convince Biden to invoke the DPA to help the world get off of fossil fuels are having conversations about this issue right now.
I’ll be honest – this was a long shot campaign strategy. We weren’t sure the White House would respond to our demands. But seeing the incredible traction and momentum reminded me why we take long shots: when a bold idea comes along at the right moment it can create real, transformative change.
With gridlock in Congress, it’s rare to see action on climate or efforts to phase out fossil fuels at the federal level. However, this is a unique moment in time, and all options are on table. What makes this particular proposal so genius? The DPA is an existing law that Biden has already used to produce masks for the pandemic and supplies for firefighters.
Using the DPA to ramp up production of renewables and heat pumps would help us fight climate change, reduce Putin’s power, and potentially create millions of jobs here in the U.S. It’s a win-win-win.
These are the moments Stand.earth was made for. Our community is nearly 700,000 people strong, and with the right pressure in the right spot at the right moment we could make a difference that would have global impacts.
Whether we’re moving fashion giants like lululemon and Levi’s, taking on oil and gas projects like the Trans Mountain Pipeline and Phillips 66 refinery, or leading a movement divesting trillions from the fossil fuel industry, the Stand community is constantly doing the impossible in the pursuit of a better world. I’m so proud to be here with all of you.
Stand.earth challenges corporations, industries, and governments to prioritize the well-being of people, our environment, and our climate by creating long-term, effective solutions. None of this work is possible without your support.
