Citi is the world’s second largest funder of fossil fuels, and America’s largest funder of coal. No matter where we turn, it’s impossible to escape the destruction they’re causing.
That’s why we’re going after Citi, hard. In the past month, there have been five – count ‘em, five – actions targeting Citi for their role in climate chaos. We can’t escape the consequences of their dirty banking, so they won’t be able to escape us.
First, during Citi’s AGM, activists from New York Communities for Change, Extinction Rebellion, and Reclaim Our Tomorrow, held a festival and occupation outside of Citi’s headquarters. Hundreds of people came to rally, play games, and listen to music, and then over 35 people camped out in front of the headquarters overnight. When executives came in the next morning to host Citi’s shareholder meeting, they were greeted by protesters calling them out for their financing of climate destruction.

The next week, Citi’s CEO, Jane Fraser, was speaking at the Milken Institute, a conference for the ultra-wealthy at the ritzy Beverly Hills Hotel. Partners protested that conference, handing out leaflets to everyone who walked in, despite high-level security that would rather the protesters just go away.

Two weeks ago, moms and kids visited the Citi HQ for a Mother’s Day action: they sang songs, gave out flowers, and delivered a card for the CEO from the children: stop financing fossil fuels, and stop destroying our future. The moms and kids held their ground in a tense stand-off with Citi security as they tried to deliver the card to the building; eventually a senior executive was forced to come down to talk to the moms directly.
Then, last week, Citi’s Chief Sustainability Officer tried to use two clean energy events to greenwash the bank’s dirty reputation. The first was at a Clean Energy Summit at Bloomberg, where activists were ready and waiting. They protested the event and handed out fliers to attendees so everyone would know the truth about Citi. Once onstage, their executive wasn’t in the clear: she was forced to respond to being called out for greenwashing by her co-panelist, Richard Brooks from Stand.earth.
Finally, on Thursday, that same executive tried to do another public greenwashing event, this time at a Politico Energy conference in DC. But our movement was there, too. In addition to a protest outside the event, brave activists interrupted the Citi Chief Sustainability Officer on stage, handing her the Inaugural Greenwashing Award for her and Citi’s work trying to launder their image.
And we’re not done yet. Citi keeps greenwashing, so we’ll keep making sure they don’t get away with it. You can help today by emailing Citi executives and letting them know the pressure will only continue to build, unless and until they get out of funding fossil fuels.
