Mark your calendars for our Yes on Prop 1AWebinar & GOTV Kick-Off on January 7th, 5:30 – 7:00PM to learn more about Prop 1A, why social housing is a powerful Green New Deal solution, and how you can get involved.
THE RETURN OF THE CATS ON JANUARY 2ND
The 350 WA Civic Action Team is our grassroots state climate policy campaign! We take action to support sound and just climate policy passing in the Washington State Legislature. We collaborate together to make it easy and accessible to take collective legislative action!
Our campaign is about to kick off for the legislative session in January and you can get involved. At the 350 WA Civic Action Team we work hard to make strong climate justice connections across many different policy areas including Housing, Building Electrification, Waste Management, Transportation, Forestry, Police Accountability and Criminal Justice Reform, Energy, and more.
CAT Campaign Launch
Thursday, January 2nd, 6:30-7:30PM RSVP
All are welcome, whether it is your first time hearing about the 350 WA CAT or if you worked with us for years. This will be a night to get excited about all the awesome work we will do together over the session and see what a powerful group of folks we are a part of.
FUN FACTS CORNER with THE RESEARCH TEAM
We spent the last few months (among other things) researching nice things we could have for our communities and our climate.
For example, we can have…🚉 🚃Free transit! Both King County Metro and Sound Transit make 50% of their revenue ($150 and $100 million a year, respectively) from businesses that provide free ORCA cards to their employees. Meanwhile, it costs KC Metro $17M a year to do revenue collection. We recommend taxing all large King County businesses just enough to pay for their employee ORCA cards.
This would be enough to cover free KC Metro transit for all! 🚉
👀Stay tuned for another Research Team fun fact next month!

PARTY WITH THE FOREST DEFENDERS
Join your fellow climate and forest defense supporters for a party with the Forest Climate Alliance, with special guest Dave Upthegrove, the new WA Commissioner of Public Lands-elect.
Awareness is growing about the key role PNW forests play in mitigating the climate crisis; less well known is the Forest Climate Alliance, which has been hard at work behind the scenes of the growing movement across the PNW working at the intersection of forest defense & climate justice.
Join us to hear from Dave Upthegrove about work ahead for the future of our state forests, the work of the Forest Climate Alliance and connect with others excited about this growing movement across the PNW. Contact Alex with questions or for more information.
WASHINGTON CLIMATE SAFE PENSIONS 2025 KICKOFF
We are campaigning to push the Washington State Investment Board to be a leader on climate. The WISB can and should make a plan to transition out of the fossil fuel industry; increase investments in climate solutions; increase transparency on climate risks, and use its ownership power over companies to push for action that aligns with a just transition away from fossil fuels.
On January 14th, we are going to talk and scheme about the $200 billion in retirement saving the Washington State Investment Board manages and how we can leverage that toward climate justice. See you there!
If you’re a current or former public employee in Washington you are especially well positioned to have an impact on this campaign.Let us know here!
CLIMATE COMMUNITY NIGHT: COZY EDITION
Escape the cold, gather together in community, eat some comfort food (forget your New Year’s diet), and take action to advance climate justice in 2025!
Climate Community Night is back in the new year! And now on a monthly schedule! This is the time when our community members–from long-term volunteers to newly engaged activists to climate curious folx to seasoned 350 staff–come together to eat, connect, build community–and yes, to bring the cozy.
COZY Climate Community Night: Comfort Food & Social Housing
January 16, 2024 RSVP HERE
And what’s more cozy than permanently affordable housing for all? January’s Climate Community Night will be all about social housing–why it’s a powerful climate and Green New Deal solution, and how we can win it for Seattle! Prop 1A (formerly I-137) taxes wealthy corporations so we can fund green social housing in Seattle and will be on the ballot in Feb 2025! You can learn more about social housing and its connection with climate justice, get trained on how to reach out to voters, then join with others to help get the word out! All while building community–and being super cozy!
If you’re new, you can also attend a new volunteer orientation before the potluck, learn more about the shenanigans of various 350 Seattle teams, and find multiple ways to plug in. Here’s the order of the evening: 6:15-6:45 pm New Volunteer Orientation in the 350 Seattle Office 6:30 pm Potluck Begins in the Auditorium 7:00-7:30 pm Social Housing Programming/Training 7:30-8:30ish pm Socializing, Take Action Together, Team Tabling
Bring yourself, for sure, and if you want, something for the potluck–comfort food is encouraged! If you’re new, let us feed you! Slippers and pajamas are fine. Anything cozy goes! Feel free to pop in for as long as you are able, or come for the whole evening–in any case, we hope to see you there!
Getting there, building logistics and accessibility details here.
Masks are encouraged. If you feel any symptoms of sickness or have been knowingly exposed directly to COVID or other infections, please stay home and help keep us safe.
THE ANTI-WAR X CLIMATE TEAM
The Anti-War x Climate Collective works in support of communities most-impacted by US foreign policy (= militarism and war), especially to expose the role of militarism, the climate crisis, exploitation and ecocide. If you would like to research some aspect of US military involvement in Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Korea, to name a few places in the world where there is less local attention to the ecological and climate cost of our government’s militarism, please let us know. More locally, if you would like to help 350 Seattle in its coalition work to end the annual Blue Angels over Seattle, let us know!
The Aviation Teamhas been super active addressing aviation’s climate, health, and environmental justice implications.
SeaTac Airport’s draft Environmental Assessment of its expansion plans were finally released, and we are working with many community groups to mobilize opposition. Thank you to the 87 people who submitted comments. It’s not too late to sign and share our coalition’s No Added Harm letter.
We continue to fight for better regulations on so-called sustainable aviation fuelsand against any leaded fuel used in small planes. In addition, we are expanding our connections with railroad activists and joined the opposition to the Blue Angels at SeaFair.
The Federal Policy Team is on a listening mission post-election. We’re paying close attention to what our electeds and local and national leaders are saying. We’re reading, thinking, and imagining. We’re asking ourselves these question, “what do we want to fight for?” and “what are the best ways to build our power and movement now?”
During the remainder of the lame-duck session, we will fight hard to defend the wins achieved in the Inflation Reduction Act as strongly as possible, and help make sure that the Biden administration’s pause on liquefied natural gas export terminals is made permanent. Simultaneously, we are working to figure out where our energies will best be spent during the next federal administration.
No matter what, as Bill McKibben says, we’re excited to build a future powered by the sun, wind, and energy storage. We’ll next be meeting on Zoom at 5pm on Wednesday, January 8 – please join us and bring all your ideas!
The Book Club is excited to announce our reading list for 2025! We will be digging into a variety of topics including organizing strategy, the roles of unions in democracy, some speculative fiction, how we can abolish fossil fuels, how we create an economy that balances ecological sustainability with meeting the basic needs of people, and much more!
If you are interested in staying connected with the Book Club, you can sign up through this form and we will get you looped in to our emails and signal channel!
CLIMATE GRIEF & EMPOWERMENT
We desperately need to create spaces where we can touch our fear, grief, and anger around what is happening to our world, acknowledge our overwhelm, expand our perspectives, and then emerge with a new sense of how we want to show up in this unique time in history.
So consider joining us for the next Climate Grief and Empowerment Group, where we process our climate-related emotions in community. We meet monthly on every second Saturday! Together, we’ll engage in collective practices that deepen our capacity for dwelling with difficult emotions and strengthen strategies for coping in uncertain times.
We welcome adults (18+) for as many or as few meetings as you would like! The Climate Grief and Empowerment Group is co-sponsored by 350 Seattle and Climate Action Families, out of the recognition that ongoing emotional support plays a critical role in building community resilience and robust social movements.

Maybe you’re experienced in facilitating, or organizing, or have skills in performance arts (theater, spoken word, music, dance, and beyond), visual arts (graphic design, painting, drawing, screen printing, building props, sewing, and so much more). Or maybe you are an organized person, or you like data and want to help with the imagery or photo library behind the scenes, or people with creative strategic humor and energy who like to brainstorm. We also need people at art builds, and more with skill sets like DJs, snacks setup and cleanup, and welcomer – is that you? (See the Volunteer Opportunities Doc linked at the end of the newsletter for more details.)

COMMUNITY RESILIENCE
Help us create a more resilient activist community!
Do you have a skill or service you would like to offer at low or no cost to the 350 Seattle activist community as a way to take part in and support the work we do? No matter your strengths and skills, there is a place for you! Maybe you’re able to offer tax prep help, or a free acupuncture session, or pet sitting. All skills are welcome! Please fill out this form with your own offerings, and we’ll reach out to confirm details. We’re excited to hear from you!
Lastly, take a minute to bookmark our Community Activist Resource List, full of helpful resources of all kinds. Feel free to share with others in our broader movement community who may be interested!
SHOUTOUTS
“John, Rob, Elizabeth, Anne, Ursula, Merle, Andrea, and Mary have shown up and/or spent a lot of time writing and networking in opposition to SeaTac Airport’s absurd environmental assessment of their expansion plans. It’s been a huge effort, and we appreciate your support of the community coalition events and your defense of the climate and health equity.”
– Laura & Brandon
“Huge shout out to the Welcome Team: Tiffany, Steph and David! The Welcome Team launched in October ’24 to fill a critical gap – making sure that folks joining 350 Seattle feel connected, supported and cared for. In a large community like ours, it can be hard to know where to start or who to reach out to if you’re new. The Welcome Team makes it easy and accessible by doing 1-1 phone calls where they ask questions, share stories, build connection and help new folks plug in. With so many people activated by the election, the Welcome Team is playing an essential role in growing our movement to meet this moment!”
– Jess
“Sending appreciation to Beth Brunton, for her optimism and resilience with the Federal policy team. She is consistently welcoming and inclusive to new people. She keeps track of a lot of complicated legislative priorities, and she embodies the joyful warrior for climate.”
– Julia
AND FINALLY
Want a way to search all of the ways you can be involved with 350 Seattle? We compiled a (nearly) comprehensive list that is deemed the Volunteer Opportunities Doc. Our teams keep this document updated so if between newsletters you are scratching your head, this resource is for you.
See you next year!
