The Summer of Heat campaign is now in full swing – and this is unprecedented! It is the biggest and longest mobilization targeting Wall Street since Occupy. All summer long, we are disrupting the headquarters of the companies funding the destruction of life on our planet.
Today, 100+ activists in orca costumes shutdown Citibank, the world’s largest funder of coal, oil, and gas expansion. Why? Oil spills. Deafening noise from drilling rigs. Ocean acidification. The orcas are angry and they are rising up.
Over the past few years, orcas have famously expressed their rage by sinking the yachts of the rich and powerful. Now, they are coming for Citibank. Citigroup is the worst funder of fossil fuel expansion from 2016 to 2023. Since the Paris Agreement went into effect in 2016, Citigroup has poured $396.3 billion into coal, oil, and gas.
The climate crisis is having huge impacts on the oceans. The ocean is 30% more acidic than it was before humans started burning fossil fuels on an industrial scale, imperiling countless species. Roughly half of all coral reefs―which surpass even rainforests for their biodiversity―have been destroyed since the 1950s, largely due to climate change.
In solidarity,
