This morning, 150+ climate defenders blockaded every entrance into Citibank’s Global HQ, preventing hundreds of the bank’s senior management from getting to work on time.
Since the Paris Agreement was adopted in 2015, Citibank has been the world’s largest funder of coal, oil, and gas expansion. And so we’re here to say, enough is enough. If you’re going to disrupt the climate with your business practices, we will disrupt your business with our bodies.
We have a call script and phone numbers ready to go. You just need to pick up the phone and make the call. Let’s flood their phone lines with hundreds of calls demanding that they stop funding fossil fuels.
Today’s action marks the very beginning of the Summer of Heat on Wall Street, a sustained campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience against the banks, investors, and insurance companies bankrolling new coal, oil, and gas projects. We’ll be back at Citi’s HQ every day this week; and the week after that; and the week after that.
We want to be clear that we’re not doing this because it’s fun or easy.
We’re doing this because the fossil fuel industry is a death machine. Air pollution from fossil fuels kills 8 million people a year. The climate crisis ― which is caused by the burning of fossil fuels ― threatens the lives of billions and countless ecosystems.
Ending the fossil fuel industry is our generation’s greatest challenge ― and it is a challenge we intend to rise to; it’s a challenge we intend to do everything we possibly can to meet.
