Holy Cow! (A letter to the Editor from Jeanne Poirier)
It amazes me how learning can change us. Having been a climate activist for decades, my finger has been pointed at fossil fuels. Early on I remember being told there’s more fingers pointing back at you than are pointed at “others” – so while I confess, I still think fossil fuels need to be replaced as much as possible with renewable, sustainable energy – here is my “AHA”.
As individuals we have little power – though more than you might think. But by changing our relationship with food we can have a huge impact on the climate emergency we are facing. First, I learned that we waste around 1/3rd of the food produced! (So grateful for Winton Compost!). Then I found out about the huge resources we expend to provide meat and dairy products. If we were to choose a plant-based diet, the resources of water, feed, and land could eliminate thousands of pounds of carbon, methane and more every year.
I am encouraged when I see restaurants and drive-thrus offering plant-based alternatives, because honestly, even eating a little less meat goes a long way. I also learned while coal is considered the worst of fossil fuels with 1 pound releasing 2-4 pounds of carbon; raising 1 pound of beef releases 100 pounds of carbon!
Books I get from the library on plant-based diets focus on health, the cruelty of factory farmed animals and/or great recipes! It wasn’t until the local Rotary offered the plant-based diet challenge information, I really “got” how my individual choices have huge impact on our climate/earth. I’ve done two challenges now and love the monthly plant-based potlucks. My friend says: “There isn’t a better restaurant in town!” – and I agree!
You can find out about this at: https://esrag.org › plant-rich-challenge or search Plant-Rich Challenge – ESRAG – Environmental Sustainability Rotary . . .
The next Plant Based Potluck is August 7
Enjoy!

P.S. I (Sue Kane) did the Plant-Rich challenge and learned a lot!!!!
