At M4BL, we fight for our Black siblings wherever they are in the world, until we are all free. Today, we’re asking you to mobilize for Kenya’s LGBTQIA+ refugees.
Our partners at the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project or BLMP are supporting a week of action with Kenyan organizations to demand that both the United Nations and Kenyan government urgently act to protect the human rights of LGBTQIA+ refugees, allies and their children who live in Block 13 Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya.
In the early hours of March 15th, Block 13 was attacked by a petrol bomb, burning two queer refugees who were taking shelter in the Kakuma camp and causing the entire community to fear for its physical safety. There have already been four fire attacks on LGBTQIA+ refugees living at the Kakuma camp just this year. In 2020, the community experienced over 40 separate incidents of homophobic and transphobic violence that resulted in severe injury and/or death of adults and children.
The majority of the refugees who live in Block 13 fled Uganda because of an anti-gay bill backed by the U.S. religious right. Until now, neither the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) nor the Kenyan government have intervened to protect the rights of the refugees living at Kakuma.
This is why BLMP has joined Kenyan and global partners in a week of action to draw urgent attention to what’s happening in Kakuma and demand that both UNHCR and the Kenyan government take immediate steps to protect the lives of Kenya’s LGBTQIA+ refugees.
