Backbone Campaign

Jeanne —

Salmon in the Northwest – and the orca that rely on them for food – need your help. This keystone species is in danger of disappearing forever because of four dams on the lower Snake River. Year after year, salmon populations have declined dramatically in the region; extinction is on the horizon – unless we act now.

We can wait no longer.  All four salmon species of the Snake River Basin are on the Endangered Species List. Our government has spent over $17billion on salmon recovery, and still the fish declines are staggering: instead of the historic levels of tens of thousands of returning fish, only 4 sockeye were able to naturally swim back to Idaho’s Stanley Basin in 2021.

Backbone Campaign and our supporters demand Congress and the Biden administration take urgent action to prevent salmon extinction. The only option left is to breach the 4 lower Snake River dams and replace the services they provide.

Climate change is accelerating extinction on a global scale, and in the Northwest, salmon populations are on the verge of collapse. The four dams on the lower Snake River are raising river temperatures well above lethal levels, suffocating and cooking salmon where they live.

As extinction looms, the rights of tribes and Indigenous people in the Northwest – who were promised abundant salmon by the United States through treaties and other binding commitments – are being denied. The loss of salmon is an injustice to tribes and Indigenous people. Congress and the Biden administration must make this right.

Stand with tribes and Indigenous people: Take Action HERE

We are in a crucial window of opportunity – political will is growing and policy leaders are looking at breaching as an option. You can help take this 30-year campaign over the finish line.  Contact Senators, the President, and his Secretaries and demand that they enact the largest salmon and river recovery in history – accomplished by breaching the four dams on the lower Snake River.
