Sharon Lavigne, the 2021 Goldman Environmental Prize winner, 2022 Laetare Medal recipient (The Laetare Medal is the most prestigious award given to American Catholics), and one of Times “The 100 Most Influential People of 2024” leads the charge against these expansions with her organization, Rise St. James.
Rise St. James is a faith-based grassroots organization, founded by Sharon Lavigne in 2018, that is fighting for environmental justice as it works to defeat the proliferation of petrochemical industries in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Now, they are battling against Formosa Plastics’ proposal to build a massive multibillion-dollar plant in the area.
