Today, the Supreme Court put the final nail in the coffin to the Millennium Coal Terminal in Longview, WA. This decision comes after 4 different permit and regulatory denials and then 5 legal appeals by the company in a wasteful attempt to overturn those denials. Along the way, people, organizations, communities, Tribal Nations, and the State of Washington persisted to defend our health and safety against the coal industry.
We did this together! Over the course of a decade, people across the Pacific Northwest Region came together to build our power together and stop the coal industry from building out 7 terminals. Together, we showed up, we shared our skills, our ideas, and our perspectives to build the Power Past Coal coalition to its successful conclusion to literally powering past coal here in the Pacific Northwest. Together, we stopped every single terminal from Coos Bay, Oregon to Texada Island, British Columbia!
Of course our shared fight for a livable, equitable and resilient Northwest is far from over. And, we must celebrate our collective wins. Today’s decision is a reason to celebrate!
In the Fall, we are going to pull together a virtual gathering to celebrate our collective wins. Look for more information, including a date, shortly. |
