Dear Jeanne —

Washington is on the brink of making history. With Initiative 1631, you have the chance to show the country that we can transition from fossil fuels to clean energy — and we can do it in a way that’s fair and just for everyone.

I’ve dedicated my career to climate action, and I’m incredibly excited and inspired by what’s happening in Washington today. Not just what’s happening with Initiative 1631, but how it’s happening, with a broad and diverse coalition of people from all corners of the state standing together to fight for our climate, our health, and our future.

Washington has always been a leader on clean energy. Now, Initiative 1631 can be the next huge step forward, creating a clean energy economy that works for everyone without destroying our planet and ensures a safe and healthy future for our kids.

Initiative 1631 is a fair and practical response to the urgent health and climate threats that affect us all. I know that if you win, your victory will send a message across the country. Will you join me in saying yes on 1631 by signing up to volunteer to canvass?

Here’s how I know this will work: Initiative 1631 puts a fee on the largest polluters choking the air and driving the climate crisis. It uses funds from those fees to invest to reduce pollution, expand clean energy, assist communities most affected by the climate crisis, and help workers transition to a low-carbon economy. Your victory will show the country that climate action is an issue for all Americans and show that we have practical solutions in our hands today.

If there’s anything I’ve learned in my decades fighting for climate solutions, it’s that fossil fuel companies and their friends are desperate to hold on to control and keep us hooked on dirty energy. And they’re ready to spend whatever it takes to do it. To defeat them — and create the future we want — it’s going to take all of us working together. But if there’s anything the incredible coalition in Washington has shown, it’s that we can.

The Yes on 1631 team has a goal of reaching 308,000 voters by November, can you help make it happen by signing up to volunteer to canvass?

I’ve said many times in my career that we must change to solve the climate crisis — and we can change too. I-1631 and the amazing coalition behind it shows we will. Please stand with me and together, we’ll succeed.

Thank you,
Al Gore
