News from Representative Newhouse

Upcoming: Free File Tax Event

Date: January 23, 2019
Time: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Location: Columbia Basin College, SWL Building, Meeting Room 117, 2600 North 20th Avenue, Pasco

Next week, my office will participate in a Free File community briefing and workshop hosted by the Computer & Communications Industry Association. Representatives will be available to discuss free tax prep services provided by the IRS, like Free File, and provide assistance for those filing their taxes. This is the first filing season that Americans can take advantage of lower tax rates, doubled standard deductions, enhanced Child Tax Credits, and flexibility – thanks to the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Even under this new, simpler system, Free File will be there to help filers feel confident that they are claiming every deduction and credit they are eligible for.

Shutdown Update: Come to the Table

Another week has passed, and the partial government shutdown is still in effect. Democrats have, once again, proved they are more interested in playing political games than in serious negotiation when the country needs a bipartisan compromise to fix border security and reopen the government. House leadership continues to bring up legislation from the Senate that does not contain priorities for Members in the House of Representatives that the President has explicitly stated he will not sign.

Last week, Congress passed and, on Wednesday, the President signed legislation to guarantee backpay for employees that are currently furloughed or working without pay once the government is reopen. However, this week, my colleagues in the majority rejected a vote that would have ensured federal employees receive their first paycheck of the year while negotiations continue.

On Tuesday, House Democrats boycotted a meeting requested by President Trump to negotiate a compromise to secure the border and reopen the government. Then Speaker Nancy Pelosi cited “security concerns” in an unprecedented request to reschedule and dictate the form of the President’s State of the Union address to the nation later this month. The Department of Homeland Security responded that DHS and the Secret Service are “fully prepared to support and secure the State of the Union.” These shameful games must end, but they continue to refuse to come to the table.

I will continue to work on behalf of my constituents to find a compromise that the House, Senate, and the President can agree on. I am eager to provide real relief for federal employees and get to work on Central Washington’s priorities.

I want to hear from you:

Which issues would you most like to see Congress address?
Reining in the federal debt
Agriculture and trade
Immigration reform
Health care
Economy and jobs

Military Academy Nominees

Every year, I have the honor of nominating students from Central Washington to attend one of our nation’s prestigious Military Service Academies. I am always impressed by the academic success and personal accomplishments of the young people who strive to serve our country. I am grateful for my nomination board that helped to review applicants, and I am very proud of the nominees we have recommended. I wish them the best of luck as they continue through the application process. Click here to learn more about the nominees.

Standing Up for Life

Each year, on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I am reminded that all life is precious. When hundreds of thousands of Americans march in Washington D.C. in support of the unborn, I am reminded to keep fighting for the innocent lives who can’t speak for themselves. I will continue to promote pro-life policies, make adoption more accessible, and empower families in Central Washington and across the country because I believe protecting the dignity of human life upholds our society’s highest values.

To stay current on the work I am doing around the District and in Washington D.C., I encourage you to follow me on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram and to read updates on my website. It is an honor and a privilege to represent you in Congress.

Sincerely,

Dan Newhouse
Member of Congress
